How Much Does a Custom Mobile App Cost for a Small Business in 2026
By E.M. Grey · Published Nov 2, 2026

What Actually Decides the Price
The real driver of an app's cost isn't the idea, it's which of three very different ways you build it. You can build something simple yourself with a drag-and-drop tool, you can have a lightweight app made that works right through a web browser without ever going through an app store, or you can have a fully custom app built from scratch for iPhone and Android. All three can end up looking like "an app" to your customers, but the price gap between the cheapest and the most expensive runs well past $100,000. Before you ask a developer for a quote, it helps to know which of these three you're actually asking about, since "how much does an app cost" is really three different questions wearing one disguise. If you haven't settled whether your business needs a dedicated app at all, our breakdown of who actually needs one is worth reading first, cost only matters once the need is real, and that post also walks through the tradeoff between the browser-based option and the fully custom option in more depth than this one will repeat.
The Build-It-Yourself Option Almost Nobody Budgets For

A drag-and-drop app builder is the cheapest way to get something working, often $0 to $500 a month in subscription fees rather than a project invoice. That subscription only covers the tool itself though, not the hours someone still has to spend inside it building screens, connecting your data, and testing on real phones, so the sticker price understates the real cost for anyone without time to spare. Having a developer build something fully custom, by comparison, runs anywhere from $40,000 to $400,000 depending on complexity, a gap wide enough that it's worth at least trying the build-it-yourself route first, especially for a first version nobody has validated with real customers yet.
The Costs Nobody Mentions Until After You've Signed
A launch quote is never the full cost, both app stores keep charging after the app ships. Apple charges $99 a year to publish an app, with a separate $299 a year option for businesses that only need the app for internal use, and Apple takes 30% of in-app purchases and subscriptions, or 15% for small developers under its Small Business Program. Google's app store charges a one-time $25 fee instead of a yearly one, and takes 15% on a small developer's first $1 million in sales. On top of store fees, industry guides put ongoing upkeep (bug fixes, phone operating system updates, security patches) at roughly 15% to 25% of the original build cost every year, so a $60,000 app carries something like $9,000 to $15,000 a year in costs that show up long after the invoice is paid.
Which Path Actually Fits Your Business
The honest answer depends on what the app needs to do, not on which option sounds the most impressive. A drag-and-drop tool or a browser-based app covers nearly everything a loyalty program, a booking flow, or a reorder button needs. A fully custom app only earns its price when it genuinely needs something a browser can't do, things like tracking a phone's location in the background, connecting to store hardware over Bluetooth, or push notifications reliable enough to run a business on. The same logic shows up with a website and with custom software, the option that actually does the job usually beats the one that sounds the most impressive on a sales call.
