Is Your Business Showing Up? Google Business Profile and Local Visibility in 2026

Body

A few weeks ago we covered the fundamentals of local search in our small business SEO guide (

https://greymountain.software/blog/seo-for-small-business-local-organic-ai-2026

). This post picks up where that one left off, because the 2026 numbers on Google Business Profiles tell a story every local owner should hear: fewer people are seeing local listings this year, and that is not the bad news it sounds like.

Fewer Views, Same Customers

Birdeye's 2026 State of Google Business Profiles report found that impressions per location have dropped 53.8%. Before you panic, look at the second number: customer actions like calls, clicks, and direction requests fell only about 5%. Casual scrolling is disappearing as AI answers and smarter search results filter out window shoppers. The people who do reach your profile are closer to spending money than ever.

That changes how you should think about your listing. It is no longer a billboard chasing eyeballs. It is the front door for customers who have already decided what they need.

Customers Search by Category, Not by Name

The same report shows 86% of profile impressions come from category searches, things like "plumber near me" or "coffee shop open now," rather than searches for a business by name. Most of the people finding you have never heard of you. Your categories, services, hours, and photos are doing the introduction on your behalf.

Photos pull real weight here. Google's own data shows profiles with photos get 42% more direction requests, yet many verified profiles sit with almost no recent images.

Verified and Complete Profiles Win

Verification keeps climbing as a baseline requirement: 76% of profiles were verified in 2025, up from 71% the year before, and verified profiles generate up to 4 times more website visits. Google reports that customers are 2.7 times more likely to trust a business with a complete profile and 70% more likely to visit one.

And speed matters. Research from Google shows 78% of people who search for something nearby on their phone visit a business within a day.

Where the Clicks Go Next

Here is the part many owners miss. Of the actions customers take on a profile, 47% are website visits, 38% are direction requests, and only 15% are phone calls. Nearly half of your most qualified prospects click through to your website. If that site is slow, outdated, or missing, the profile did its job and the site dropped the handoff. Our website services page (

) explains how we build sites that catch that handoff.

A 20-Minute Monthly Routine

You do not need an agency retainer to stay visible. Once a month:

Open your profile insights and note which search terms brought people in.

Add two or three fresh photos of real work, products, or your space.

Confirm hours, including upcoming holiday hours.

Reply to every new review, positive or negative.

Click your own website link on a phone and make sure the page loads fast and looks right.

The Takeaway

Local visibility in 2026 is about quality, not volume. Fewer people will see your listing, but the ones who do are ready to act. Make sure your profile is verified, complete, and backed by a website that finishes the job.

If this was useful, share it with another local owner who is wondering where their foot traffic went. And if you would like a second set of eyes on your online presence, reach out through our contact page (
